Jackman, Maine July 15th

Sunday: Flagstaff Lake which had been so nice, reared it's head on Sunday. It became very windy and difficult paddling by the time the end was reached. And it rained. Grand Falls portage was very hard. No wheels and had to double carry a long ways around it. Decided to try the Maine Huts and Trails "Grand Falls" hut. Anything but a hut, this is a really nice lodge with running water and hot showers. There is a main lodge area and separate bunkrooms, with real mattresses. Even kitchen facilities and a dining area.

Monday: Up Spencer Stream. A rainy day, wet from above and wet feet. Most of this waterway has to be lined, walking in the stream, slippery rocks, poor footing, but no choice as there is no portage trail and insufficient water to paddle. Many places, they even had to take gear out of the boat and carry it, so as not to damage the canoe dragging it over the rocks. Took six hours to cover only 10 miles. Reached Spencer Lake, the planned campsite and decided to keep going. Paddled across the lake and across Fish Pond. Than onto Spencer Road for the 7 mile portage to Spencer Rips. Familiar territory now as they have both been on the Moose River here on a previous trip. Stayed at the Spencer Rips site where they reached the Moose River.

Tuesday: Making good time on the Moose River and succesfully up across Attean Pond, which can be notoriously windy. Into Jackman early afternoon. Stop at Bishops store for any necessities and a quick lunch. Got their package of food from the post office. This is the last resupply for the trip as the rest of Maine gets really remote with very few services. Putting back into Wood Pond, than continue down the Moose River and hope to stay at Long Pond tonight.

This may be last contact before the end of their trip.
